STAY TUNED FOR 2016 details!
World Breastfeeding Week (in Canada) will be celebrated October 1-7,
In Newfoundland and Labrador, this year’s theme is: “Breastfeeding…Making it Work”. This theme focuses on the importance of supporting families at the community level, especially in the early weeks, when both mom and baby are learning how to breastfeed.
The goal is to support Newfoundland and Labrador mothers with starting and sustaining breastfeeding. Mothers are challenged with trying to balance work and family life, and therefore employers and the community at large can all have a role in supporting breastfeeding families.
This year the Baby-Friendly Council of NL will continue with the implementation of “Making Breastfeeding Your Business NL Toolkit”, developed specifically for local businesses and community organizations. The Toolkit promotes and supports breastfeeding at a community level, as well as supports business/organization employees when returning to work after a maternity/parental leave.
Baby-Friendly NL would also like to highlight other initiatives that help increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates in NL. These initiatives include the importance of “delaying the bath” in the first 24 hours after birth and placing baby “skin to skin” in the early days.

Press Release for EVENT on Oct 2, 2015 Breastfeeding Celebration on Confederation Hill, St. John’s NL
Breastfeeding Celebration, October 2, 12-1pm, Confederation Hill
Baby-Friendly NL, Breastfeeding Support-NL, along La Leche League (St. John’s and Paradise groups) invite you to attend a breastfeeding celebration for World Breastfeeding Week 2015!
We are hoping to gather as many women (and supporting family members!) as possible to breastfeed all at once (with concurrent events scheduled in other parts of the province) on Friday Oct 2, 12-1 pm in the East Block of the Confederation building.
- To celebrate breastfeeding and World Breastfeeding Week’s theme… to support women to combine breastfeeding and work. Whether a woman is working in the formal, non-formal or home setting, it is necessary that she is empowered in claiming her and her baby’s right to breastfeed.
- To thank the provincial government for continued funding to protect, promote and support breastfeeding families.
CONFEDERATION BUILDING EAST BLOCK: We have permission to congregate in front of the East Block of the Confederation Building, as well as permission go inside the front lobby of East Block on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2 for our event from 12-1pm (if the weather is good we will stay outside). We can sit on the grass outside, but you can also bring something to sit on if you prefer (it might be good to have something to sit on if we go inside). We also have someone to play accordion to liven up the atmosphere!
Mark your calendars …and check our Facebook Events page periodically for updates (Link: https://www.facebook.com/babyfriendlynl) . We will discuss practical aspects such as parking, promotion, media spokes people, picture disclaimers, etc.
